SUMMARY:National Peace Dialogue Forum (NPD-Forum 2024) "What is peace?"
DESCRIPTION:This event will address national challenges and explore new pathways for solutions for sustainable peace such as innovation\, engaging in critical dialogue and trust. \nThere are few glimmers of hope in today’s security landscape. Wars\, armed conflicts\, coups and the associated cost to human life dominate the headlines. Humanitarian needs are soaring. Geopolitical competition is increasing.  A set of spiralling environmental crises\, from climate change to biodiversity loss\, is destabilizing the natural world on which human life depends. \nAgainst this background\, diplomacy is stumbling. The ability of the United Nations system to manage and restrain conflicts and to build peace looks increasingly uncertain. The unresolved issues of global justice\, equity and double standards are driving a wedge between the Global North and Global South. As the global system fragments\, new alliances and spheres of influence are emerging. \nThe NPD-Forum 2024 will unpack this complex context in which humanitarian\, development and peacebuilding actors are working and look at how actors are delivering on the ground in the face of these challenges. It will discuss ways to address growing mistrust and distrust between the North and South\, and between citizens and their political representatives. It will explore how multilateral efforts such as the Summit of the Future could strengthen national arrangements for peace and security. And the Forum will look for possible pathways towards a more peaceful\, unified future. \nThe NPD-Forum 2024 will welcome more than 200 local\, national\, and global state and civil society actors as well as policymakers. Amongst them will be national and international government institutions\, parliamentarians\, civil society organizations as well as international partner networks of the IIP member organizations. Together\, we want to reaffirm the peacebuilding communities’ claim to influence policy debates and strengthen peacebuilding narratives. The forum will provide networking opportunities in an inclusive environment that brings together peacebuilders from state actors and civil society from different parts of the world. \nThe NPD-Forum 2024 will focus on three policy areas\, and also dive into discussions about effective implementation and to share best practices on these key questions: \n\nReshaping Alliances for Peace and Security: What is the role for Africa?\nPromoting Peace through Climate Justice: How can environmental peacebuilding address injustices and conflicts to promote a just transition?\nFeminist Development and Foreign Policy: How can dilemmas in power shifts be addressed?\nWhat does conflict prevention look like in today’s world?\nWhat trade-offs need to be made in the face of competing priorities?\nHow can organizations continue to engage and motivate people in a system that often feels close to breaking point?\n\nAre we ready for just peace?\nStructural causes for violent conflict cannot be addressed with military means. Decisive action by the peacebuilding community and beyond is needed to build just peace. \nSpeakers and participants from around the nation\, globe will shape the discussions and interactive sessions on current challenges and trends: \nSide events on related topics are scheduled to take place \nFormat\nThe NPD-Forum 2024 will feature a diverse range of sessions\, including high-level policy debates\, roundtables\, workshops and fireside chats. These will give policymakers\, development and humanitarian actors\, peace entrepreneurs\, researchers\, security experts\, and civil society organizations space to discuss and work towards integrated solutions to security\, peace and development challenges. \nThe Forum works with partners to foster open exchange between the humanitarian\, development and peacebuilding communities. It offers an innovative platform for sharing knowledge\, novel practices and ongoing policy developments.
